CCNA Overview

CCNA Overview

Cisco Certified Network Associate

The CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification is an entry level certification for networking professionals. It is the first step to higher level certifications, such as Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Cisco Certified Internet work Expert (CCIE) certification.

A hardnut?
Unlike any other exam CCNA exam is not a tough nut to crack. It just requires right amount of preparation with adequate skills. The exam of Cisco is not difficult. It requires dedication and sincerity on the part of the candidate and hard work. Once cleared, this exam lays down the foundation of glorious future with miles to go and laurels to follow.

The CCNA certification is the best option for the computer net workers, field technicians, IT helps desk engineers, and other professionals of IT associated with controlling the computer networking process. This certificate is considered as the basic qualification for installing, operating, configuring and troubleshooting a mid-sized switched and routed network. A CCNA certified professional is considered to be trained in working with a networking environment that includes a group of switched networks. In simple terms, the CCNA certified professional is able to manage a host of computer routed networks connected through switches.

Some Facts Under

The CCNA exam is of one and half hour duration comprising of around fifty questions. The level of the exam is moderate with very little hard questions. CCNA certification is valid for three years after which the candidate has to reappear for recertification. It is a process Cisco has envisaged to keep the candidate’s knowledge up to date. So to obtain recertification the candidate has to pass the ongoing CCNA exam or ICND2 exam or any exam of the 642 category. It is entirely up to the candidate to go for recertification process. But Cisco always recommends going for the recertification because it is very important for IT professionals and other candidates to be aware of the changing trends and keep your knowledge updated.

There are no prerequisites to CCNA, but it should be treated as an intermediate certification. Those who have no prior knowledge about networking should lay their foundation by taking CompTIA Network. CCNA certification is itself a prerequisite to CCNP, CCSP and the CCIE.

CCIE-Routing and Switching

Written Exam – #350-001, v4.0

Cost: US$350

Duration: 120 minutes (Up to 150 minutes for non-English countries)
Questions: 90-110 questions
Available Languages: English
CCIE Prerequisites: None
Pearson VUE

Cisco has revised the certification requirements for CCIE R&S and published the new v4.0 standards on the Cisco Learning Network. Exams based on the new requirements are now available and immediately replace the current exams.

Effective October 19, 2009 Cisco CCIE® Routing and Switching v4.0 certification exams are available in all testing locations worldwide. Both the written and lab exams have been refreshed with new questions covering MPLS and VPN networking. The written exam includes new scenario-based questions. The lab exam now requires hands-on troubleshooting of preconfigured networks, in addition to configuration.

The CCIE R&S written exam is a two-hour qualification exam with 90-110 questions taken online at a Cisco authorized Pearson VUE testing center. The questions are a combination of multiple choice and more complex, interactive items that assess technical knowledge on topics such as IP, IP routing, bridging and switch-related technologies, and some equipment commands.

Requirements for Certification

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional certifications or training courses are not required. Instead, candidates must first pass a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam.

Update to the CCIE Written Exam Format and Scoring
Effective February 17, 2009, candidates taking CCIE written exams will no longer be allowed to skip a question and come back to it at a later time. In addition, the overall exam score will now be reported on a scale from 300-1000.

Written exams are administered by independent vendors at cost of US$350. Costs may vary due to exchange rates and local taxes (VAT, GST).

Candidates must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18 months of passing the CCIE written exam. Valid passing scores on written exams expire after 18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions:-

Q: What exactly is being changed on the CCIE R&S written exam?
A: The CCIE R&S v4.0 written exam will be refreshed with new questions to reflect the current job role expectations of employers. Scenario-based questions will be added to the multiple choice questions. New topics include the skills associated with planning and evaluating network changes, implementing MPLS, Layer 3 VPN, IPv6, EIGRP and multicast; and configuring performance-based routing. More information is available on the CCIE Written Exam Overview page.

Q: Now that the CCIE R&S v4.0 has been announced, can I still take the CCIE R&S v3.0 exam? How long will it be valid?
A: The CCIE R&S v3.0 written exam will be available through October 17, 2009, at all Pearson VUE testing centers. Passing the v3.0 written exam qualifies a candidate to take any available version of the CCIE R&S lab exam. As with all CCIE written exams, a passing score on v3.0 written exam will remain valid for three years, as long as the candidate attempts the lab exam once within the first 18 months. If the lab is not attempted, the written exam becomes invalid and the candidate will have to retest using whatever written exam is available at that time.

Q: Which exam will be used for recertification?
A: As of October 18, 2009, CCIEs who take the CCIE R&S written exam for recertification will be given the v4.0 exam and should prepare using the exam topics found on the Cisco Learning Network.

Q: Are the previous Cisco 360 components applicable to the CCIE R&S v4.0 exams? Should candidates studying for CCIE R&S v4.0 exams wait for the new Cisco 360 materials to begin work?
A: The learning components available at first launch of Cisco 360 are still relevant to candidates studying for the CCIE R&S v4.0 certification exams. No Cisco 360 Learning Program components are being retired. There is no need for candidates to wait for revised Cisco 360 material to begin their study and practice. The subscription model ensures that Cisco 360 customers can take advantage of all new content as it is released and do not need to wait.
